fan will be the most creatively wonderful obsessive-compulsive site you’ve ever seen. Johan Santana was perfect for 10 Pirates hitters yesterday and less so thereafter but if you are a Mets fan of any significant length, the moment he made it through three innings the precious thought of a no-no started dancing in your imagination. Now you have a daily companion to help you through it. And while you’re at it, read this wonderful column by my friend Steve Politi on a name that still gives Mets fans night shivers: Jimmy Qualls.
Don’t ever say The Whacks didn’t do anything for you.

Mets fans never want to give themselves a break, and non-Mets fans rarely want to give the team a break, but the more you see the lineup they try and win with every day, the more you wonder how they’ve managed to remain afloat this long — and the more you wonder how much longer they can keep it up. Look, injuries happen to everyone. But the last two nights in Pittsburgh — not the joke team Washington is, either, by the way, not by a long shot — the Mets were missing their Nos. 1, 3 and 4 hitters from the lineup — all three of whom, by the way, were in the lineup when the Mets made the Pirates look like the Altoona All-Stars a few weeks ago in sweeping them at Citi. How would the Phils do, long-term, without Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez? The Yanks without Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeiera and Alex Rodriguez? There’s no crying in baseball, and no excuses. Just sayin’.

I never question Lou Lamoriello‘s logic or his methods, because he has proven to be as good at the job of GM-ing a team as anyone we’ve ever seen around here, in any sport. But I do hope he figures out a way to open communication with John Madden, and sign him, because Madden is as good and as tough and as much of a team-first winner as any athlete we’ve had in this area in a good long time, Jeter included. And if that doesn’t happen, the Rangers better be waiting.

It really is impossible not to like the way Teixeira plays the game, isn’t it?
