There may not have been a deeper borough of quality teams, parity and overall talent than across the Verrazano Bridge.
Tottenville made it to the PSAL final and won its first division title since 2006. The teams that finished right behind them in Staten Island A, Petrides and McKee/Staten Island Tech, both made it to the semifinals. Staten Island Academy eaned the PSAA and ACIS crowns, but lost a chance for an unbeaten season by falling in the NYSAISAA final.
Over in the CHSAA, St. Joseph Hill dominated during the regular season, but was upset by Notre Dame Academy, which eventually fell to St. Joseph by the Sea in the Archdiocesan final. It was the Vikings’ first title since 2006.
All-Staten Island girls soccer Player of the Year: Amanda Feldstein, Petrides
It’s hard to have a better four years than Feldstein did. The senior scored her 100th career goal, something no other player has done in Petrides history, to help lift her team to its first ever PSAL semifinals berth. Feldstein scored a city-leading 42 goals and added two assists in the PSAL’s most competitive division, helping the Panthers post a program-best record of 12-3-1. She is a prototypical striker who combines speed and elusiveness with a strong and accurate leg, one that led to the best career the program has ever seen.
All-Staten Island girls soccer Coach of the Year: Kim Caccese, Petrides
Caccese experienced the most success in the program’s history with a team she helped mold and mature over the years. Petrides finally put it all together after struggling to get out of the quarterfinals and finishing behind Tottenville and MSIT in Staten Island A. Behind Caccese’s passionate and knowledgeable leadership, the Panthers finished with a program best 12-2 record, beat MSIT for the first time ever and placed second in the division. The success carried over into the playoffs where they advanced to their first-ever semifinal, losing to eventual champion Beacon.
First team
M Jackie Bruno, McKee/Staten Island Tech
The junior, like her team, started slow, but finished with a flurry. She scored 21 goals and handed out three assists. Bruno a combination of speed and skill, scored some of the biggest goals during the Seagulls’ eight-game winning streak. Bruno tallied the winner in the regular-season finale against Tottenville and in the quarterfinals against Bronx Science.
GK Madeline Barbarino, St. Joseph by the Sea
The Vikings weren’t the most explosive offensive team, but they didn’t need to be with Barbarino in net for the second straight season. The senior and four-year varsity player made the biggest save of the year in a 1-0 win over Notre Dame Academy in the CHSAA Archdiocesan final. She made five stops, including a diving one on a point blank shot by Alana Urcia to save the title.
D Breanna Brukalo, McKee/Staten Island Tech
The Seagulls’ eight-game winning streak late in the season was based largely around defense and Brukalo was a big reason why. MSIT allowed just two goals during that span and grabbed 1-0 wins over Tottenville and then Bronx Science in the quarterfinals. The senior has the ability to take away angles and the speed to run people down.
F Danielle Fuller, Staten Island Academy
There may not have been a player in the city that had a better or more clutch postseason than the junior forward. She tallied 23 goals and 18 assists to lead Staten Island Academy to a 17-1-1 record. Fuller scored the winners in the PSAA title game and the NYSAISAA quarters and semifinals. Her strong leg and superb first touch made her dangerous from anywhere on the field.
F Amanda Moschella, Staten Island Academy
The senior put a great finish to her stellar career, including earning a Division I scholarship. The Vermont-bound senior was the main cog to an explosive Tigers attack. She scored 18 goals and added 16 assists thanks to her defense, breaking speed and precise runs. Staten Island Academy won both PSAA and ACIS title and earned a trip to the NYSAISAA final.
M Kasey Murphy, Tottenville
The senior meant so much to the Pirates both on and off the field. When she missed games midseason with a leg injury, she was coaching girls from the sidelines. On the pitch she was Tottenville’s blue-collar field general. Murphy scored three goals, but did the dirty work on defense at midfield to get the ball out to the Pirates playmakers.
D Victoria Roda, Petrides
There may not have been a finer sweeper in the city than the Petrides junior. Roda helped the Tigers stymie some of the PSAL’s best offenses all the way to their first-ever semifinal appearance. The senior’s specialty was her speed from sideline to sideline and her ability to use her strength to physically change a striker’s route to the goal.
M Kaitlyn Regan, Tottenville
Pirates coach George Kaplan used to joke that it was good to have someone fast, strong and 5-foot-11. The senior striker made full use of all of her gifts, leading Tottenville in goals with 24, many of them when her team needed them most or to answer an opponent’s score. Regan recorded a hat trick against Bard in the quarterfinals.
D Stephanie Russo, Notre Dame
The senior moved from stopper to sweeper early in the season and helped transformed the Gators defense, something coach Bill LaTour said was one of the keys to his team upsetting St. Joseph Hill in the Archdiocesan semifinals. The tough and smart defender rarely gave up and helped bring along the young players around her.
M Meghan Siller, St. Joseph Hill
The junior midfielder was the motor to the St. Joseph Hill offense. She made an art out of sending through balls down the bumpy pitch at Miller Field to the Hilltoppers speedy forwards. Siller tallied three goal and eight assists and helped her team win back-to-back CHSAA Staten Island crowns.
M Katrina Wiesner, Petrides
The junior formed one of the city’s most prolific 1-2 punched with Amanda Feldstein to help Petrides to the most successful season in program history. Wiesner tallied a PSAL leading 25 assists to go along with 10 goals. Her pinpoint passing and no-fear style helped make all of the players around her better.
