The Red Bulls are bringing Zach Thornton, a former MetroStar, back to New York.

Thornton, the veteran keeper who was signed yesterday, probably will be an affordable backup to recently re-signed Jon Conway, after making $57,000 last year.

Thornton was the league goalkeeper of the year in 1998 while leading Chicago to the MLS Cup, and is 111-71-33 all time. He started eight years for the Fire and played another season at Portugal’s Benfica, but he’s 34 and played just 32 minutes last year for Colorado before being waived.

They’ll take part in today’s MLS draft in Baltimore, their second-round pick being No. 16 overall. They lost their first-rounder as compensation for signing coach Juan Carlos Osorio, who is looking at a number of offseason acquisitions, including 21-year-old Colombian forward Luis Carlos Cabezas.
