New Zealand
Slovakia’s Vladimir Weiss may have been the man of the match, but Reid was the hero of the day. The 21-year-old climbed over the Slovakian defense and scored an injury-time equalizer to pull out an unexpected 1-1 draw.
2. MAICON
Brazil
The fullback, fresh off a Champions League crown with Inter Milan, broke the spell of an unexpectedly scoreless match with North Korea in the 55th minute with an exceptional strike from the sharpest of angles, just off the end line.
3. CARVALHO EDUARDO
Portugal
Not that the keeper was peppered, but Ivory Coast clearly had the better chances. Other than Cristiano Ronaldo, who hit the woodwork, Eduardo was the only Portugal player who acquitted himself well, with two saves including one on Salomon Kalou’s blistering second-half shot.
