It would take some major league public relations savvy to clean the mess the Brooklyn Cyclones suddenly found themselves in last month.

With last year’s manager, Tim Teufel, now leading the St. Lucie Mets, the Met organization entrusted its Brooklyn affiliate to Leon Lee. Before Lee could manage one game, he resigned April 8 after being arrested on two counts of indecent exposure.

The next candidate to spin through the revolving doors: Tony Tijerina. But don’t expect any controversy to swirl through his Coney Island office. The 34-year-old has been with the Mets’ organization for 14 years as a player and coach, so the Amazin’s know all they need to about their newest hire.

“I wasn’t around when that incident happened,” Tijerina said. “It was an unfortunate incident. They interviewed people outside, but I think it came down to the best person within the organization. They wanted someone who knew the system and what was expected.”

Tijerina said he wasn’t worried about some of the added scrutiny that would be heaped upon him because of the controversy.

“I only know what I read in the media,” Tijerina said. “When it comes to what I’m here for, it’s to teach the players and develop winning players.”

Tijerina has managed in the minors for the past six years. The last two seasons, he managed the Capital City Bombers (A) of the South Atlantic League. Before that he was with the St. Lucie Mets (A) of the Florida State League and the Pittsfield Mets (A) of the New York-Penn League. In 2002, he was named the Best Managerial Prospect in the South Atlantic League by Baseball America.

“One of my pluses as a manager is players feel comfortable with me,” Tijerina said. “I’m going to encourage the players to use their tools and learn. If they make a mistake, fine. They’re not going to learn unless they try.”
