Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman issued an on-air apology Sunday after saying today’s young golfers should “lynch Tiger Woods in a back alley” during Friday’s telecast of the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Hawaii.

The comment occurred at the end of the second-round telecast while Tilghman was joking around with co-anchor Nick Faldo about the young talent that could possibly challenge Woods.

Tilghman, who works as the main play-by-play announcer during the Golf Channel’s PGA Tour telecasts, has reached out to Woods in order to rectify the situation.

“I have known Tiger for 12 years and I have apologized directly to him,” Tilghman said. “I also apologize to our viewers who may have been offended by my comments.

“I can assure you that there was never any intention to offend anyone. I’m sorry for any misunderstanding.

Golf Channel representatives said Tilghman would not be punished for the remark.
