This was one even Tony Romo couldn’t mess up.
The Dallas Cowboys quarterback — who has been accused, quite convincingly, of being a walking jinx to his various favorite sports teams — went to Durham, NC, on Wednesday night to back Duke against Wake Forest.
APHow convenient. The Blue Devils, ranked third in the country and featuring the likely No. 1 NBA draft pick, entered as 19-point favorites over the hapless Demon Deacons, who had won just five ACC games in 16 tries. And they were facing off in the high-pitched, blue-decked environs of Cameron Indoor.
The Dukies won 94-51. The Crazies chanted: “Tony Romo, sit with us” — and Romo headed into the Duke student section at the next-to-last TV timeout.
He had been sitting with Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, tight end Jason Witten and free-agent running back DeMarco Murray behind the scorer’s table.
Romo and Cowboys head coach Jason GarrettGetty ImagesMaybe there was one lasting trace of the Romo Curse: Freshman phenom Jahlil Okafor, the prize of the draft lottery, finished with six points for his first single-digit scoring game, after some early foul trouble.
But it was this kind of handpicked mismatch: Freshman guard Grayson Allen came out of obscurity to hang up 27 points in the rout.
