Here we are stuck in the dog days of spring training – enough about who’s going to be the fifth starter – can’t the games start to count. At least those stuck in spring training, it’s warm and sunny in Arizona and Florida.

Those stuck in the late snowstorm in the New York area today have had enough. That’s why when all else fails, including the weather, it’s time to head to the DVD.

The latest version of The Natural arrived at my house recently. This one is the director’s cut and Barry Levinson adds 15 minutes of footage never seen before for this Sony Home Entertainment Production.

Says Levinson, “I was able to not just simply add a few more scenes … but to actually re-cut the first act as it was originally conceived. This version is much closer to what I envisioned and it was fantastic to finally bring it to fruition.’’

The Natural is a great movie to begin with, but now it may be even better. Two other classics also arrived: Safe at Home, featuring Yankee legends Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and Whitey Ford. Suddenly it’s the early 60s and I’m nine years old again. Perfect.

Kill the Umpire, starring William Bendix in that 1950 film is the second part of the double feature.

All this got me thinking about my Top Ten Baseball Movies of all time. Here’s my list and a favorite line or comment.

10. The Sandlot – “You play ball like a girl.’’

9. Pride of the Yankees – “Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth.’’

8. For Love of the Game – Fairly accurate portrait of a major leaguer’s life, but what was with catcher Gus Sinski (John C. Reilly) wearing his Tigers cap AFTER games. Kelly Preston makes it all worthwhile.

7. Bull Durham – “Man that ball got outta here in a hurry. I mean anything that travels that far oughta have a da– stewardess on it, don’t you think?

6. A League of Their Own – Easy choice. “There’s no crying in baseball!’’

5. Eight Men Out – With Comiskey running the show, you knew why players hated owners. Shoeless Joe deserved better. Did you know the real scheme was hatched in the hotel just beyond the Green Monster in Fenway.

4. Bad News Bears – Love the beer everywhere. The problem with the youth game today is that there are too many coach Roy Turners (Vic Morrow) around and not enough Buttermakers (Walter Matthau).

3. Field of Dreams – Shoeless Joe: “What’s with the lights?’’

2. The Natural – “God, I love baseball.’’ Enough said.

1. Major League: Every once in a while during the season a team will have this DVD playing in the clubhouse hours before the game and the players love it. It’s a fun movie, baseball should be fun. And I loved Cerrano before he became president in “24.’’ “Hats for bats, keep bats warm.’’

There they are, my Top 10. What did I miss or underplay. You’re up.
