While Gary Sheffield blew his top over yesterday’s report in The Post that said he might be traded to the Mets for Mike Cameron, Cameron had a different opinion.

“I thought it was pretty cool,” Cameron said after the Mets’ 6-3 loss to the Phillies. “At least I made it to the back page with Sheffield. It’s cool, man. It is what it is.

“I’ve been rumored on every hot rumor thing. Baltimore, San Diego, all sorts of places. I’ll keep showing up and try to put it out there in right field and do what I do.”

Met GM Omar Minaya would not comment on the trade report, and he tried to categorize the Met right fielder as part of his team’s foundation.

After the Mets made a counteroffer, the Yankees turned down the deal as late as Tuesday, a source said. Sheffield was told yesterday he wouldn’t be traded to the Mets.

Cameron, whose agent wasn’t notified of the trade talks, said this latest situation wouldn’t affect Cameron’s play.

“Dude, I’ve been on the block and speculated since February,” he said. “Take it for what it’s worth.”

After playing center field for virtually his entire career, he was moved to right this season and has thrived despite wrist and leg injuries., Cameron is batting .297 with six homers and 16 RBIs in 40 games.

“I think Cameron’s doing a great job in right field,” Minaya said.

Reminded that the Mets made no secret of discussing a Cameron deal previously, Minaya said, “That was back in spring training, but we’re very happy with Mike Cameron. He’s part of our team. I want to say he’s part of our core.”

Minaya confirmed that he and Yankee GM Brian Cashman spoke over the weekend, but wouldn’t answer whether he feels there’s a trade that could help both teams. However, the Met GM said he’d have no hesitation dealing with any club, even the Yankees.

Minaya preferred not to reveal whether he has anything imminent. Cameron has a limited no-trade clause, but the Yankees are among the teams to which he could be dealt. A source said the Mets aren’t actively shopping Cameron.
