It was another rough night in what is quickly looking like its going to be a rough season for Pitt and its head coach, Jamie Dixon. As part of yesterday’s action here at the Garden for the Jimmy V Classic, Indiana handled the Panthers on its way to a 74-64 victory.
Ashton Gibbs had 25 points to lead Pitt (7-2), while Brad Wanamaker added 18 and Dante Taylor chipped in 12 off the bench, while Verdell Jones III had 20 points to lead Indiana (4-4), who gave Tom Crean his 200th win as a Division I head coach.
While the Panthers have a 7-2 record, it is a pretty deceiving one. They trailed nearly the entire game before beating lowly Wofford, 63-60, trailed by 16 with less than 10 minutes remaining against Duquesne before the Dukes fell apart down the stretch and scored only 47 points in a win over New Hampshire.
With only softies remaining until Big East play begins, we’ll see what kind of team the Panthers really are in January.

Dayton nearly had another tough loss early in the season, before hanging on to take down George Mason at UD Arena, 56-55. Chris Johnson had 14 points to lead the Flyers (6-2).
After losing close games to Villanova and Kansas State in Puerto Rico, Dayton nearly suffered the same fate against a game George Mason team. With Old Dominion at home and a trip to New Mexico still on the schedule, the Flyers have some decent games left before A-10 play begins in earnest next month.

In other action around the local leagues last night, Temple beat Miami (Ohio), 64-42; Xavier became the second A-10 school in Ohi to fall to Kansas State, 71-55; Rhode Island beat local foe Quinnipiac, 83-74; Marquette took down a local rival of its own, beating Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 71-51; and Charlotte blew out Winston-Salem, 94-52.
