TWO RESERVES EXIT ST JOHN’S
Forward Eric King of Brooklyn and point guard Tristan Smith of Long Island have received their release from St. John’s and are in the process of finding a suitable Division I college where they can complete their playing career. Each has two years of eligibility remaining.
As was reported exclusively in the Feb. 27 editions of the Post, King, who did not play in the Red Storm’s 81-63 home loss to Boston College the previous night, had resigned himself to the fact St. John’s was not the best fit for him. King, a charismatic person with outstanding athletic ability, never got on the same page as coach Mike Jarvis, who values practice effort as much as game performance.
“Eric is at a stage where he wants something a little different than what we can provide for him here,” Jarvis told the Post.
King, who averaged 4.7 points and 3.7 rebounds, was considering South Florida until coach Seth Greenberg took the Virginia Tech job. He also is looking at DePaul and possibly Richmond. When he arrived at St. John’s last season, Jarvis said the former Lincoln star was so talented he should start every game in his Red Storm career.
Smith, a soft-spoken presence in the locker room and a determined player, was squeezed out of minutes in a backcourt dominated by Marcus Hatten and freshman Elijah Ingram. Hatten has completed his eligibility, but the prospects for increased playing time for Smith were bleak because former Cardozo High star Daryll “Showtime” Hill, who sat out last season under NCAA academic guidelines, is expected to be eligible.
“[Smith] wants to play, and I understand that,” Jarvis said. “He’s improved tremendously in practice, and to his credit, he’s continued to do extremely well in school, so he should have no trouble finding a place where he’ll feel better.”
Smith, who averaged 1.5 points and had 16 assists, is looking at Tennessee State, North Carolina-Wilmington, Manhattan and Wagner.
A source told the Post that swingman Tim Doyle met with Jarvis about his future at St. John’s. The source said Doyle has not made a decision on transferring.
