Despite the dry weather Thursday and completion of the men’s fourth round, the US Open has announced the men’s final will be pushed back to Monday at 4 p.m. and the women’s final will be played on 9/11 Sunday at 4 p.m.
It will mark the fourth straight year the Open has pushed back the men’s final from Sunday to Monday. Despite the stretch, the USTA is not in discussions to add a retractable roof.
The women’s final had been scheduled for prime-time Saturday night..
The decision was based on the USTA’s and players’ reluctance to have the men play four straight days and the women play three straight days.
The USTA also is faced with court issues as Armstrong Stadium, the Open’s second largest court, has been shut down indefinitely because of a breach in the court that has caused water to seep through by one baseline.
Earlier Thursday, Rafael Nadal complained about playing four straight days to reach the final.
“If you don’t have rest, you have a big chance not to be fit enough to play well the next match,’’ Nadal said. “It is something that in my opinion can not happen.’’
The men’s quarterfinals are set for Friday and tickets from Wednesday’s cancelled night session will be honored.
Tournament director Jim Curley said the schedule was changed “in an effort to be fair to the players and our ticketholders.”
“This is the result of a collaborative effort with the players, CBS Sports and tournament officials to address the issues that arose from the inclement weather earlier this week,” he said.
