They survived the Group of Death, but can the US men’s soccer team overcome the “kiss of death” of being supported by the Mets?

Those were the words “@ollieblog” used to describe the photo the Mets tweeted Monday night of second baseman Daniel Murphy wearing a white US jersey with his No. 28.

After the gesture of support for the US going into its Round of 16 match Tuesday against Belgium, the reaction was predictable:

“#USMT is so screwed now,” tweeted @Hello_Davey.

“@Mets is this a [bleeping] joke? Mushing the rangers wasn’t good enough?” added @TheSportsBetch.

“How about focusing on winning some baseball games … this nonsense is fine … if you’re winning baseball games,” wrote @KevinNewJersey.

The Mets, (maybe) coincidentally, made three errors in the eighth inning Monday night to give away a game to the Braves.
