Jockey John Velazquez, voted the Eclipse Award as the nation ‘s top rider the past two years, was rushed to the hospital in Lexington,Ky.,yesterday with a possible fracture of the shoulder or collarbone after being injured in a

spill at Keeneland when his horse,Up an Octave, broke down, fell and rolled over on him after winning the Forerunner

Stakes on turf.

A resident of West Hempstead, where he lives with his wife,Leona, and two young children,Velazquez,34,was described as “awake and alert ” by track physician Dr.Barry Schumer, who examined him in Keeneland ‘s first-aid room.Velazquez was then taken to the University of Kentucky ‘s Chandler Medical Center for X-rays.

“He ‘s all bruised up,” Velazquez ‘father-in-law, trainer Leo O ‘Brien, said yesterday evening on Long Island, before driving Leona to the airport to fly to Kentucky.”He ‘s sore in his chest and shoulder.

The X-rays haven ‘t shown anything yet.” Up an Octave, after winning the Forerunner by a half-length as the even-

money favorite following a long stretch duel, suffered a compound fracture of the left front leg and went down about a sixteenth of a mile past the wire. The 3-year-old colt was euthanized on track.

Velazquez is the go-to rider for Eclipse-winning trainer Todd Pletcher, who saddled Up an Octave. The trainer-jockey

combo has teamed up to win many major races over the past several years, and Velazquez was set to ride either Bluegrass Cat or Keyed Entry, both longshots, for Pletcher in this year ‘s Kentucky Derby on May 6.
