In a shocking move, The Post has learned that Golden State GM Chris Mullin has offered Stanford basketball coach Mike Montgomery the Warriors’ head job.

Sources close to Montgomery say he will accept the offer. Montgomery will replace Eric Musselman, who was fired yesterday after two seasons.

Reports had circulated throughout the season that Mullin was preparing to pick from among former Knick Mark Jackson, Rod Higgins or Mario Elie, who played high school basketball with Mullin for two years at Power Memorial as a replacement for Musselman, who coached the Warriors to a 75-89 record in his tenure.

Montgomery, 57, spent the last 18 years of his collegiate coaching career turning the Cardinal program into the one of the nation’s best.

The move comes only months after Montgomery led the Cardinal to an astonishing 26-0 record before finishing 30-2 and losing to Alabama in the second-round of this year’s NCAA Tournament.

Montgomery, who was honored in April with the John Wooden “Legends of Coaching” Lifetime Achievement Award, will try to buck a recent trend of college coaches whose career has turned sour in the NBA such as former Knick coach Rick Pitino, former Nets coach John Calipari, Leonard Hamilton, Lon Kruger and Tim Floyd.
