One of them is.

In an interview with ESPN’s Peter Gammons, Alex Rodriguez accused Selena Roberts, the reporter who broke this story for Sports Illustrated, of stalking him — among other problems.

“I mean, what makes me upset is that Sports Illustrated pays this lady, Selena Roberts, to stalk me,” Rodriguez said. “This lady has been thrown out of my apartment in New York City. This lady has five days ago just been thrown out of the University of Miami police for trespassing. And four days ago she tried to break into my house where my girls are up there sleeping, and got cited by the Miami Beach police. I have the paper here. This lady is coming out with all these allegations, all these lies because she’s writing an article for Sports Illustrated and she’s coming out with a book in May.”

Moments after Part 1 of the interview aired on ESPN last night, Roberts responded with a statement.

“The allegations made by Alex Rodriguez are absurd,” Roberts said. “I’ve never set foot in the lobby of Alex’s New York apartment building, never spoken to the University of Miami police, and never set foot on his home property or been cited by the Miami police for doing so.”

Clearly this is a minor issue in the grand steroid scheme of things. But if Rodriguez is the one being untruthful, and I have no idea if he is, then what does that say about his credibility in this situation. Nothing good, at least. And why would he get indignant about the reporter when he’s the one admitting to steroid abuse? Oh, A-Rod you confuse me so.

As Joel Sherman pointed out in his column today, if A-Rod lied yesterday about the time period he took steroids, his credibility will be shot for good. Not about this issue with Roberts, this is a footnote in the story, but one that was worth mentioning since there is such a wide discrepancy on both sides of the stories.

Roberts, who is writing a book about A-Rod, expanded on those thoughts while talking on WFAN today with Evan Roberts and Kim Jones. She made references like, “Let me take each absurdity at a time.”

Asked about breaking into his Miami home, Roberts said, “It was a complete lie.”

Again, maybe Roberts is the one lying. Maybe she did break into Rodriguez’s Miami home. Who knows? But if it is Rodriguez, then it’s a curious start to his come-clean campaign.

At the very least, let’s assume Rodriguez won’t be providing Roberts with any glowing quotes for her book jacket.
