SARATOGA SPRINGS – Assuming today’s Grade 2, $150,000 Lake Placid Handicap stays on the Mellon turf course after all four of yesterday’s grass races were switched to the main track, a wide-open field of nine 3-year-old fillies will slug it out going a mile-and-an-eighth.

Only one of the nine boasts a victory over this course: Wonder Again, who came from off the pace over yielding ground to win a mile-and-three-sixteenths non-winners of one allowance by a neck at nearly 10-1 on Opening Day, July 24. In her race before that, the daughter of Silver Hawk broke her maiden by 3 ½ lengths.

“She developing and coming along beautifully,” trainer Jimmy Toner said. “I think she’s got class and quality. I know she lacks experience, but good horses have a tendency to step it up.

“I’d rather have a lightly- raced 3-year-old that could turn into any kind than an experienced 3-year-old that’s reached its potential. She reminds me of Tribulation [a stakes-winning full sister to Wonder Again’s dam]. They’re built the same way and both have that quick burst of speed.”
