What happens when a Duck attacks a Bluefish with a bat?
One ends up in the slammer.
Last night Long Island Ducks’ shortstop and former Major League All-Star Jose Offerman attacked Bridgeport, Conn., pitcher Matt Beech with his bat during the second inning on a game, the Connecticut Post reported.
Offerman was arrested and sources told the paper he is facing second-degree assault and was slapped with $10,000 bond. Both Beech and catcher John Nathans were hurt in the attack.
The beating, which delayed the game for 17 minutes, started after Offerman was hit in the calf by a wild pitch during his second at bat. He had homered during his first.
Offerman charged the mound, with bat in tow, and took a swing at Beech’s pitching hand. He connected, breaking Beech’s finger, according to police.
Nathans was struck in back of the head once the benches cleared and mayham ensued.
“He hit him with a cut fastball in the left calf,” Bluefish manager Tommy John told the paper of the pitch. “And the next thing you know, Offerman’s going to the mound with his bat over his head taking swings at Beech. He took at least two, maybe even three (swings).”
“It was just a scary incident for everybody witnessing what took place,” said Bluefish player Mike Porzio, who signed a witness report after the attack. “Everybody was in shock at the time because it’s not something you see. I’ve played 15 years and I’ve never seen that before.”
