With the season having just passed the halfway mark, the Yankees and Red Sox have established themselves as two of the top teams in the majors, so it’s a good time for the rivals to meet up in the Bronx this weekend.
Let’s look at how they match up:
At the plate
Getting on base: These are two of the top offenses in baseball that feature relentless lineups, with Mookie Betts, J.D. Martinez and Aaron Judge among the hardest to keep off the basepaths. Greg Bird and Neil Walker have been dreadful, while Eduardo Nunez and Rafael Devers have struggled.
Edge: Even
Hitting for power: Betts, Martinez, Andrew Benintendi and Xander Bogaerts are at least equal to Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar. The absence of Gary Sanchez hurts the Yanks.

On the basepaths: Both teams are built around power, but the Red Sox lead the AL in stolen bases.
Edge: Red Sox
In the field
Infield defense: Torres and Andujar have been more consistent defensively of late, while Boston is solid, if not flashy, with Mitch Moreland, Nunez, Devers and Bogaerts.

Mookie BettsGetty ImagesOutfield defense: In Betts, Benintendi and Jackie Bradley, Jr., Boston has three terrific outfielders. Stanton has been a surprise in left and Aaron Hicks has emerged as an excellent center fielder.
Edge: Red Sox
Bench
The Yankees figure to have either Hicks or Brett Gardner on the bench – and perhaps Greg Bird with Boston starting all lefties. Kyle Higashioka is still looking for his first MLB hit. Brock Holt has again proven valuable for the Red Sox, but Blake Swihart hasn’t hit.
Edge: Even
On the mound
Rotation: Eduardo Rodriguez (five shutout innings against the Yankees earlier this year), Chris Sale and David Price get the nod over CC Sabathia, Sonny Gray and Luis Severino, who have all struggled against the Red Sox in 2018. The Yankees pushed back Sabathia’s start in part to have him face Boston. And while Stanton has feasted on lefties this season, others in the lineup haven’t been good.
Edge: Red Sox
Aroldis ChapmanGetty ImagesBullpen: Craig Kimbrel and Aroldis Chapman have been two of the best closers, but the Yanks have more dominant arms, with Dellin Betances pitching as well as anyone right now.
Edge: Yanks
Manager
Aaron Boone and Alex Cora are having superb rookie seasons guiding their new teams.

Intangibles
The teams brawled in April when Joe Kelly plunked Tyler Austin, but nothing happened when they met the next month. Both teams have been excellent throughout the season, so this figures to be just the next chapter in what should be a season-long battle for AL East supremacy.
