With every other living member of Monument Park, from Yogi Berra to Phil Rizzuto, milling around home plate, Bob Sheppard read Charles “Red” Ruffing’s plaque.

“The Yankees’ all-time leader in wins by a right-handed pitcher with 231,” the voice of The Stadium said. “The only pitcher in franchise history to compile four consecutive 20-win seasons from 1936 to 1939 when he led the Yankees to four straight World Championships. A durable pitcher who holds Yankees records for most complete games with 261. . . . Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967. Dedicated by the New York Yankees, July 10, 2004.”

One hundred years after he was born, 58 years after he pitched for the Yankees and 18 years since his death, the Yankees honored Ruffing yesterday. “He gave you a lot of guidance on how to call a game in certain situations,” said catcher Charlie Silvera, who briefly played with Ruffing. “He would explain it to me and I did a lot of growing up that way. It helped me as a catcher and he helped me in life.”
