MLB: Strasburg K’s 8 in win
In Washington, Stephen Strasburg gave up a homer to the first batter he faced then shut down the Giants, allowing three hits in six innings of a 8-1 Nationals win. Strasburg (3-2) finished with eight strikeouts and one walk. The Nationals said Strasburg will pitch regularly until he exhausts a 160-inning limit.
* In Philadelphia, Ryan Howard hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning after the Phillies scored six runs in the ninth as they came back to stun the Reds 9-7. In the ninth, Greg Dobbs hit a three-run homer and pinch-hitter Cody Ransom followed with a tying, two-run shot off Francisco Cordero to make it 7-all.
* In Toronto, Jon Lester (11-3) pitched six innings to win his third consecutive start and the Red Sox hit four homers in a 14-3 victory over the Blue Jays.
* White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy said he will have season-ending surgery on a detached right shoulder muscle.
NBA: Fisher to meet with Heat
Lakers free agent point guard Derek Fisher has a meeting scheduled with Heat president Pat Riley today, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com.
Fisher’s preference remains to re-sign with the Lakers, but he feels the need to explore his options and listen to Riley’s pitch after the Heat landed free agents LeBron James and Chris Bosh.
* Kyle Korver is following Carlos Boozer from Utah to Chicago after agreeing with the Bulls on a reported three-year, $15 million contract.
* Wizards rookie point guard John Wall was held out of practice yesterday morning with a groin injury.
GOLF: Phil misses Scottish cut
In Luss, Scotland, Darren Clarke was nearly flawless in miserable conditions to open a three-shot lead in the Scottish Open. On a dreary day at Loch Lomond, Phil Mickelson took a quintuple-bogey on the 18th hole and missed the cut.
* In Silvis, Ill., defending champ Steve Stricker broke the 36-hole record with a score of 16-under 126 at the John Deere Classic, giving him a one-stroke lead. Paul Goydos, who shot a record-tying 59 in the first round, is a shot back after a 3-under 68.
* In Oakmont, Pa., heavy rain caused play to be suspended for the day at the U.S. Women’s Open.
TOUR: Cavendish takes 6th stage
In Gueugnon, Mark Cavendish made it two straight Tour de France stage victories, leading a sprint for the line as the main title contenders finished in a closely trailing pack on the hot, mostly flat 141.3-mile sixth stage from Montargis to Gueugnon. Fabian Cancellara retained the yellow jersey, Alberto Contador stayed ninth overall and Lance Armstrong kept his 18th spot.
ETC.: McMurray claims pole
In Joliet, Ill., Jamie McMurray won the pole position for tonight’s Sprint Cup series race at Chicagoland Speedway. Kyle Busch pounced on Joey Logano on a restart in overtime to win the Nationwide series race.
* The Flyers signed former Rangers forward Nikolai Zherdev, who spent last season in Russia, to a one-year contract.
