NCAA: UConn topples Rutgers

Maya Moore hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with less than three minutes left to propel top-seeded Connecticut past No. 2-seeded Rutgers 66-56 last night in the women’s NCAA Greensboro Regional championship.

Renee Montgomery and Ketia Swanier each scored 15 points to lead the Huskies (36-1), who rallied from a 14-point deficit to win their 15th straight game and reach their ninth Final Four – but first since winning the 2004 national championship. UConn will face Stanford in the semifinals. Matee Ajavon scored 18 points to lead Rutgers (27-7.

TENNIS: Serena beats Henin

Serena Williams defeated top-ranked Justine Henin 6-2, 6-0 yesterday in the quarterfinals of the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla. A few hours later, Svetlana Kuznetsova prevented an all-Williams semifinal. She eliminated three-time champ Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4. Top-ranked Roger Federer advanced to the men’s quarterfinals by beating Jose Acasuso 7-6 (6), 6-2. Also advancing was James Blake, who beat Radek Stepanek 6-3, 6-4.

COLLEGE: Sutton out at Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State basketball coach Sean Sutton resigned under pressure yesterday following a 17-16 season . . . Indiana will hire Marquette’s Tom Crean as its basketball coach.

* Rutgers announced yesterday it will open the 2008 football season against Fresno State on Labor Day. Rutgers was scheduled to start the season against Howard on Aug. 30, but that game was dropped after a deal was reached with Fresno State for a nationally televised game at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN on Sept. 1.

SEX SCANDAL: Mosley won’t resign

Max Mosley said yesterday he will remain president of auto racing’s governing body despite calls for him to resign because of his role in a sex scandal. On Sunday, a British tabloid accused Mosley, 67, of engaging in sex acts with five prostitutes in a scenario that involved Nazi role-playing. Although he didn’t deny his participation, Mosley said there was no “Nazi connotation to the matter.”
