VALHOL’S BAD LUCK CONTINUES
Valhol, who won the Arkansas Derby as a maiden but was eventually disqualified when charges were made that his jockey Billy Patin had an electrical device on him during the race, will undergo surgery next week to remove a bone chip from his left knee. He was expected to go off the favorite in the Remington Park Derby. He will miss the rest of the racing season and probably come back at the Fair Grounds next year.
1ST RACE – Lake Hamilton broke sharply but then eased back to third as Cat Scan set the early pace. Around the far turn, Lake Hamilton made a three wide move to threaten for the lead. Showboater rated off the pace while saving ground and moved up into contention on the turn. A hole opened up at the rail and Showboater shot through it and drew off for the victory. Sailor’s Warning tried to break through the gate prior to the start, forcing it open, but he was held back by the gate attendant. He was reloaded and then broke in the air. He recovered well, then reached contention on the turn and finished second.
2ND RACE – This is the first two divisions of the maiden special weight event at six furlongs. Another impressive juvenile performance as Saints Cup pressed the fast early pace, took the lead entering the far turn and then drew off in the stretch for a lengthy score. Final time of the race was 1:10. Barrage rated off the pace, made a three wide move on the turn, ran greenly in the stretch but was second best. Just Jack raced well on the rail and should get better as distances get longer.
3RD RACE – Race was switched to the dirt and distance was changed to 11/4 miles. Scratches decimated the field down to five. Gold Star Deputy set soft fractions but around the turn he was pressured by Double Affair. In the stretch, Double Affair drew away from the early pacesetter and went on to win. Dustin’s Dream was wide in the backstretch, angled inside on the turn and got up to pass the tiring Gold Star Deputy in the stretch for second.
4TH RACE – This was the second division of the two-year-old maiden special weight event at six furlongs. Country Only set the early pace with Millencolin rating off the pace. Around the far turn Millencolin threatened for the lead and took it entering the stretch. Polish Miner was moving well and was in perfect striking position behind Millencolin entering the stretch. But Polish Miner ran a little greenly in the stretch. The extra race of experience for Millencolin helped as he broke his maiden. Final time was 1:11 1/5, which was 1 1/5 seconds slower than the second race, the first division of this condition.
5TH RACE – Race remained on the turf and the course took a pounding. Clods of sod were flying everywhere during the race. Sejm’s Madness and We Concur went out to the early lead. In the backstretch Edgar Prado took back on Sejm’s Madness and allowed We Concur to set the pace. Around the far turn Sejm’s Madness retook the lead and had a couple lengths on the field in the stretch. Rabi, who broke slow out of the gate, rated between horses, made a wide move into contention and tried to wear down Sejm’s Madness in the stretch. But he ended up a neck short.
