The interleague battle for Los Angeles kicks off Monday with an up-and-coming ace going for the Angels and the NL Cy Young front-runner for the Dodgers.
Hyun-Jin Ryu is off to a 9-1 record with a 1.35 ERA. As impressive as that is, he has been even more impressive since the start of May.
In seven starts, he is averaging just under 7 ²/₃ innings per start with a 0.51 ERA and 0.5 walks per nine innings.
While Griffin Canning of the Angels cannot quite duplicate that, the rookie has been the team’s most trustworthy arm since getting called up. In five starts in May, he registered a 2.57 ERA with opponents hitting just .176 against him.
In Canning’s seven career starts, the Over has cashed just once while no opponent has plated more than three runs in any of Ryu’s last eight starts. Pair that with the Dodgers entering the week fourth in the MLB in team ERA in night games and the Angels being in the bottom half of the league in runs per game in night games, it makes taking the total under the play in a battle of a present versus a potential future ace.
