Pitching has not been the Los Angeles Angels strong point this season and just when it seemed like Patrick Sandoval was giving the rotation stability, a trip to the injury list has pressured the team into putting Jose Quintana back in a starting role against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday.

In nine starts this season, Quintana has a 7.22 ERA while averaging fewer than four innings per start to go with 6.95 walks per nine innings and the team is 7-15 overall in the games he’s pitched in as a starter or reliever.

The Tigers counter with Matt Manning, who has struggled in his 10 starts with a 6.10 ERA with 4.6 strikeouts per nine innings, but has done his best work at home with a 2-1 record in Detroit and just two home runs surrendered across 20 innings in his four home starts coupled with a 3.15 ERA.

The Tigers bullpen entered this series with the Angels with the second-best ERA in the MLB since the All-Star break while the Angels had scored four runs or fewer in nine of their last 11 games.

With Shohei Ohtani having just three home runs for the Angels since July 28 and the Tigers 14-6 in their last 20 home games and on 18-12 overall since the All-Star break going into Wednesday, Quintana’s re-emergence in the starting rotation will not be pleasant.
