The Houston Astros are in good shape to win the AL West and will have Jose Urquidy on the mound for the first time since June as they face a San Diego Padres team that has plenty of its own ailments in the starting rotation.

The Padres give Jake Arrieta the start. He made a trip to the injured list after leaving his outing against the Colorado Rockies Aug. 18 due to a hamstring injury. Arrieta was far from effective prior to getting injured, getting waived by the Chicago Cubs in August and has posted a 5-12 record with a 7.13 ERA overall this season. In his last nine starts, he has an 11.08 ERA with opponents hitting .404. His team has lost each of those games.

Though it’s been awhile since Urquidy has pitched, the Astros are 8-2 in his last 10 starts with opponents hitting .188 off Urquidy as he has issued six walks in 56¹/₃ innings with a 2.72 ERA in that span.

The Padres entered Friday on a 5-14 skid and it doesn’t look good for them having Arrieta face the league’s No. 2 offense in runs per game.

The play: Astros, -140.
