The transfer portal is boomin’. That means the college football bowl games are now murky.

With days until bowl games start and reportedly thousands of athletes looking for new homes, we are now in a betting nightmare as we sort through which key players are left on each team.

Or is it an opportunity? As always, it’s in the eyes of the beholder.

Below, we break down who could transfer, who has already put themselves into the portal, and whether or not the line movement has accurately reflected these changes.

Tom VanHaaren reported that several teams had immediately lost key contributors. These teams include Oregon, Alabama and Jackson State, who will all be without top players come bowl season.

All odds are provided by BetMGM Sportsbook and were accurate at the time of publishing.

Out goes Deion Sanders. Perhaps Jackson State’s players will be checked out of their big Celebration Bowl that would cap an undefeated season. Oddsmakers say this is unlikely, though.

So far, just four Jackson State players have entered the portal, none of whom are the coach’s son, Shedeur Sanders, who is the quarterback at Jackson State. He will eventually move on to Colorado, but all reports suggest that both he and his father will be present in the Celebration Bowl.

The big get for Coach Sanders was Travis Hunter, who shockingly flipped for Florida State to Jackson State and was the No. 1 recruit for the class of 2022. He is still a bit green, though, and only played in three games for Jackson State.

As of now, none of the players who are in the transfer portal made significant contributions this season. They could be contributors to a team next season – especially Hunter – but this does not affect the betting for the Celebration Bowl. For now, N.C. Central is not worth a bet, despite shockingly defeating Jackson State last year in the Celebration Bowl.

Current odds: Jackson State (-15.5) vs. N.C. Central (+15.5)

A pair of Washington State wide receivers, De’Zhaun Stribling and Donovan Ollie, entered the transfer portal, as well as two starting linebackers. They will also lose plenty of backup players, which will hurt their depth.

At the time of writing, there hasn’t been a ton of movement on the transfer portal for Fresno State. However, they are losing starting cornerback Cale Sanders, who will not be active for this game.

The line movement has been big for this one, as Washington State loses two starters on each side of the ball. Bettors certainly believe these are key losses, making Fresno State the clear favorite after opening as three-and-a half-point underdogs.

Plenty of movement from both teams here as Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz entered the transfer portal as one of the top available signal-callers. The three-year starter will leave a hole for Wisconsin in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. But Oklahoma State isn’t without its losses either.

Oklahoma State starting quarterback Spencer Sanders and running back Dominic Richardson headline this group of departures. In addition, leading tackler Mason Cobb and safety Thomas Harper are out the door. It is very tough to predict who will be affected most by these transfers and losses on the roster, which is why the opening odds have not moved.

Oklahoma State backup QB Garret Rangel did not give off a great impression in two starts for the Cowboys. This one could be an offensive struggle.

Oregon lost plenty of players to the transfer portal, but none should be massive hits to their starting lineup. The same can’t quite be said for North Carolina, as the Tar Heels lost some of their most productive defensive backs in Storm Duck, Tony Grimes and Cam’Ron Kelly.

These losses will absolutely affect their ability to stop the pass from Oregon. The three combined for 17 pass breakups and four interceptions this season. The line movement here is warranted, but could be a bit too steep.

Sharps were all over the initial line movement, moving Oregon to -13 favorites. But that three-and-a-half-point move for three cornerbacks out is a bit healthy in terms of odds movement. The Ducks are never a pass-first offense. Perhaps the line move had more to do with the market rating Oregon higher than the opener, but it’s certainly interesting.

The UCLA Bruins appear to be buyers in the transfer market these days, whereas Pittsburgh has moved on from their quarterback. Kedon Slovis entered the transfer portal at open after transferring from USC the season prior.

Whether he is actually worth two-and-a-half points is unknown, but he struggled most of the season. He threw for only 2,397 yards, 10 touchdowns and completed 58.4% of his passes.

This is not transfer-related, but Pitt star defensive lineman Calijah Kancey will not be active in this game due to an injury. This could also be a reason for this shift.

For now, this one is a stay-away pending the status of UCLA senior quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who has NFL aspirations coming his way.

Current odds: UCLA (-6.5) vs. Pittsburgh (+6.5)

Maybe some surprising odds movement, but that is due in large part to quarterback Drew Pyne, who is moving on from Notre Dame via the transfer portal. Pyne looked excellent as the Notre Dame starter, ranking 20th nationally in individual quarterback efficiency.

Perhaps Tyler Buchner could take over as the starter, but he led Notre Dame to an embarrassing loss to Marshall early in the season. South Carolina may actually have value in the Gator Bowl in December. The Gamecocks are not losing any big players on the transfer portal at the time of writing.

Tons of transfers coming left and right from Alabama, who typically bring in some of the best talent across the high school recruitment ranks. On Day 1, 13 Alabama players entered the portal, tied with Oregon for the second-most in college football.

For the most part, none of these players should play a significant role in the Sugar Bowl. They did lose starting offensive lineman Javion Cohen, wide receiver Traeshon Holden and defensive back Khyree Jackson, among others.

Several Mississippi State departures are fueling this odds flip. Running back Dillon Johnson entered the portal this week, as well as their top receiver, Rara Thomas. Head coach, Mike Leach is reportedly in critical condition after suffering a heart attack on Sunday.

Illinois is hoping to get better this offseason, with many expecting them to grab a top quarterback from the transfer portal. The following players intend to leave Illinois via the transfer portal, although none are major impact players; OL Brevyn Jones, DL Anthony Shipton, OL Blaise Sparks, DL Tre’von Riggins, RB/WR Kyron Cumby, and WR James Frenchie.
