The 2020-21 season has been a tough one for Miami, with tons of injuries to venture through, but the return of Kameron McGusty might be just what it needs to right the ship against Notre Dame.
McGusty returned to the lineup in the team’s most recent game against Syracuse, after having missed six games in December and January, and had nine points in 20 minutes. He is shooting just 26.7 percent from 3-point range in this injury riddled season, but aside from the Florida Gulf Coast game in which he exited due to an ailment, has had nine or more points in every appearance this season.
Notre Dame has been a very steady team, with more downs than ups as reflected by their 4-8 record and have been held to 68 points or fewer in five of their six games in ACC play.
A big reason for the Irish’s poor offensive output is an inability to get second chances, rating 304th in the country in the percentage of their missed shots that they rebound. Miami rates 64th in the country in rebound rate to prevent those chances and should keep Notre Dame from being able to score in its most effective way: free throws.
Notre Dame is making 79.1 percent of their free throws, which ranks 11th among Division I teams, but with Miami and Notre Dame both in the top six of the 347 Division I teams in fewest fouls committed per game, neither team figures to get to the charity stripe with regularity.
Though Miami still doesn’t have a full complement of healthy players, reinforcements are beginning to cycle back in. By having eight healthy players who are averaging more than seven points per game apiece, Miami should protect their home floor on Sunday against an Irish team that is forcing the fewest turnovers per game of any team in the nation.
The play: Miami, -2.
