The NHL has hit its stride.

After a thrilling Winter Olympics and a dramatic Stanley Cup Playoffs, hockey is trending up, and that’s led to more interest behind the betting window, as well.

Although not nearly as popular with bettors as the NFL or college football, hockey has a massive following and is often regarded as one of the most exciting sports to bet on because of the fast-paced action, momentum swings, and the value that can be found on a nightly basis.

With that in mind, we’ll discuss some of the very best sportsbooks for betting on hockey.

How to Choose the Best NHL Betting Site

There are plenty of other factors to consider when evaluating the platforms mentioned above, along with any other sportsbooks you might be looking into. Let’s talk about some of the features you’ll want to consider when making your choice:

Welcome Offers

As I’ve already discussed in the sections above, most sportsbooks will offer a welcome bonus of some sort to new users. The terms will vary, so be sure to find the offer that best fits your needs.

Existing User Promotions

A signup promotion isn’t the only time you’ll be able to receive a bonus from the sportsbook. Look for sportsbooks offering odds boosts, referral bonuses and other perks for existing users to ensure you get the most bang for your buck.

Best Odds

It’s worth noting that the best way to always secure competitive odds is to bet with a handful of different sportsbooks and compare the lines for every game you’d like to bet on. Always make sure that you’re betting with a sportsbook that has a good reputation for offering competitive odds.

Line shopping ensures you get the most advantageous line, which is crucial for long-term profitability in betting.

Range of Markets

Some bettors really enjoy betting on a wide variety of sports and/or markets. Your research process for picking a sportsbook should include a look through its array of sports and bet types offered so you can be sure that your methods of choice will be available.

Customer Loyalty Programs

With these programs, the more you play, the more you can earn. The terms will vary significantly between operators, so make sure to find a program that will benefit you, given your intended approach to sports betting.

Types of NHL bets

Moneyline

Money line betting is the simplest form of NHL betting, where you pick which team will win the match, with no possibility of a tie.

Puck line

Puck line betting involves betting on a team to win by a certain number of goals, typically -1.5 for the favorite and +1.5 for the underdog, with the odds changing accordingly.

Over/Unders or Totals

Over/under betting, also known as totals betting, is a wager on the total number of goals scored in a game, with lines typically ranging from Over/Under 5.5 to 7 goals, though they can sometimes be posted as low as 4.5 or as high as 8.5, depending on the matchup.

Prop bets

Player prop bets allow you to bet on specific player performances, such as goals, assists, or shots, providing a more personalized betting experience. Team prop bets focus on specific occurrences related to a team, such as total points scored or the first team to score, rather than the overall game outcome.

Live bets

Live betting in the NHL is characterized by its fast-paced nature, where the game can change dramatically in an instant, making it an exciting option for bettors. You can bet on popular markets such as money line, spreads, totals, and a selection of prop bets, although the range of markets may be less extensive than pregame.

Best NHL Betting Sites FAQs

If you have any additional questions on the best NHL betting sites, read on. I’ve compiled a list of some of the most frequently asked questions on the topic and answered them for your convenience.

Where can I bet on the NHL online?

You can bet on the NHL with just about any legal operator in the United States, including popular options such as BetMGM, bet365, theScore Bet and Fanatics Sportsbook.

Which sportsbook is the best NHL betting site?

While all of the sportsbooks I’ve discussed in this article are great options for NHL betting, bet365 is my personal favorite.

What types of bets can I place on the NHL?

There are many different bets you can place on NHL games. The most popular categories are moneylines, puck lines (spreads), totals, futures, and player props.

Do sportsbooks offer odds on hockey outside of the NHL?

Some sportsbooks will offer lines for foreign leagues and college hockey, but the NHL is by far the best-represented hockey league on most major North American sportsbooks.

Is the NHL a moneyline sport?

Yes. Like the MLB, the NHL is considered a moneyline sport, meaning most of the wagers are made predicting the winner, rather than playing against the spread like in the NFL or NBA.

Is there a spread in NHL betting?

Yes, although it is referred to as “the puck line” and is almost exclusively set at 1.5 goals, with the odds shifting based on the matchup. Example: If you bet Avalanche -1.5 against the Ducks and they win by 2 or more goals, you cover the puck line.

Do shootout goals count towards the total?

Yes and no. Goals scored in the actual shootout do not count towards the total in an NHL game. However, the winning team of the shootout is awarded a goal on the scoreboard, which counts towards the total.

For example, if the Oilers and Flames have a total of 6.5 goals and are in a shootout after ending overtime tied, 3-3, the winning team will get awarded a goal. Let’s say the Flames win the shootout, 2-1. The final score will now read Flames 4, Oilers 3, meaning the over 6.5 cashed.

Is hockey a good live-betting sport?

Yes. Sports bettors love to live-bet hockey because comebacks are common, and momentum tends to swing back and forth in any given contest.
