The Reds will not be going to the playoffs this season, but pitcher Tyler Mahle would like to close the season with a good showing in Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Mahle has been a completely pitch on the road compared to in Cincinnati, posting a 1.85 ERA on the road, which ranks second among starting MLB pitchers with at least 60 innings thrown on the road. He has allowed five home runs in 97 1/3 innings on the road. That’s in contrast to his numbers in Cincinnati: an ERA of 5.63 and 19 home runs surrendered in 78 1/3 innings.

On the other side, the Pirates will give rookie Max Kranick just his second home start this season. Overall, he has a 6.23 ERA, but he has allowed three runs or fewer in three of his last four starts, including five scoreless in his last start against the Phillies. He has allowed just three home runs in his 34 2/3 innings this season.

The Pirates are last in the league in runs per game with 3.7, while the Reds are ninth with 4.9 runs per game, Cincinnati, however, entered the series averaging just under 4.2 runs per game on the road, compared to 5.5 at home.

The Reds’ bullpen entered the series seventh in the MLB in bullpen ERA since Aug. 24 with a 3.33 and had scored four runs or fewer in 12 of their last 13 road games, so the bats will be silent in Pittsburgh.

The play: Reds vs Pirates, Under 8.5 runs.
