Based on the post-draw odds, the 2022 Kentucky Derby should be a fun one for the bettors. That’s because there is no runaway favorite like we’ve seen in years past.

Just last year, Medina Spirit won the Kentucky Derby at 12:1 odds.

With an up-for-grabs race, featuring a field of 20 horses and no runaway favorite, this Kentucky Derby could favor gamblers who like to take their shots down the board.

This year’s favorite is Chad Brown’s Zandon (3-1), who drew the No. 10 position for Saturday’s race, was installed as the morning-line favorite, just ahead of No. 3 Epicenter (7-2), who may have been tabbed as the chalk had the colt had a more favorable post.

But after those two, the odds start to drift; Canadian-bred No. 8 Messier (8-1) is the only other horse with single-digit odds after the draw.

In fact, the betting for this year’s Run for the Roses could shake out similarly to what we saw in 2019 when Country House was tabbed as the winner at 65-1 odds after Maximum Security (10-1) was disqualified. That field was also considered wide open, especially after Omaha Beach, who was the 4-1 morning-line favorite, was scratched. With a 65-1 horse at the top, the payouts for the 2019 Kentucky Derby were massive.

That is likely how horseplayers will build their cards for the 2022 Runs for the Roses, targeting long shots who can hit the board and add significant value to exotic wagers. Horses like No. 16 Cyberknife (20-1), No. 5 Smile Happy (20-1) and No. 8 Charge It (20-1) could all be popular long shots come Saturday evening.
