Dave Tuley, senior reporter at VSiN, joins the Post’s Bettor’s Guide for the 2018 NFL season. His handicapping pieces appear in VSiN’s online magazine, Point Spread Weekly.
Cardinals (+10) at VIKINGS: Double-digit underdogs are 4-2 against the spread this season, but that’s not the only reason I like the Cardinals here (though it’s a fact the last time the Vikes were in this role as 17-point favorites, they lost 27-6 to the lowly Bills). Arizona has covered its last three games, getting its first win last week over the 49ers after covering in a loss to the Seahawks the week prior, but the performance I like best was covering in a 16-14 loss to the Bears in Week 3. The Cards can stay within one score of an overrated Minnesota team as well.
Steelers (+2¹/₂) at BENGALS: I know the initial reaction is to “lay the short price with the better team at home.” Nevertheless, I’d argue that oddsmakers haven’t put the line at a full field goal because the road team is better and the home team is favored only due to the obligatory home-field advantage. That’s the case here, even though the Bengals (4-1 SU and ATS) lead the AFC North. The Steelers (2-2-1 SU and 2-3 ATS) stumbled out of the gate, but last week’s 41-17 rout of the Falcons was their most complete game to date and I expect them to ride that momentum to the “upset.”
Last week: 0-2
Season: 3-7.
