The Seattle Mariners have the worst batting average in MLB and have been no-hit twice this season, yet are in the top three in the AL in runs generated per hit and percentage of hits that go for extra bases. They will look to keep that explosiveness going on Wednesday in Detroit.
Tigers starter Casey Mize has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his past seven starts, but five of those have come on the road. Mize has a 4.58 home ERA with 3.2 walks per nine innings and a .267 opponents’ batting average, compared to a 2.80 road ERA, 2.6 walks per nine innings and .185 opponents batting average. The Mariners will throw former Met Chris Flexen, who is 5-3 in his return from South Korea’s KBO, but is giving up 10.9 hits while striking out only 5.5 batters per nine innings.
The Mariners had allowed at least four runs in 11 of their last 15 road games entering Tuesday, and Flexen has an 8.10 ERA and .372 opponents batting average. Factor in deficiencies in both bullpens, and a pair of offenses that have had their issues should break out.
The play: Mariners-Tigers total, Over 8.5 runs.
