The Philadelphia Phillies’ hopes of the postseason are dashed, but the team has discovered a starter of the future in Ranger Suarez, who takes the mound on the road against the Miami Marlins on Friday.

Suarez has yet to allow more than three runs in any of his 11 starts and 38 overall pitching appearances. Across his past seven starts, he has surrendered just one home run in 44 innings with a 1.43 ERA including a complete game shutout against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Marlins counter with Sandy Alcantara, who has a 9-14 record but just a 3.09 ERA, which dips to 2.17 in his home starts with opponents hitting .195 with seven home runs in 99 ²/₃ innings in his 15 starts in Miami this season.

The Marlins have given Alcantara an average of 3.2 runs per game of support, the fewest for any pitcher with at least 25 starts this season, and the Marlins are one of three MLB teams averaging less than a home run per game.

With the Marlins seventh in the league in bullpen ERA and the bullpen giving up the second-fewest home runs per nine innings in the league, the Marlins and Phillies bats will both be held in check on Friday.

The play: Phillies vs Marlins, Total Under 7.5 runs.
