In a classic clash in which something has to give, North Carolina State and Wisconsin hook up in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge tonight (9 p.m., ESPN2). The 6-0 Wolfpack enter the game fourth among Division I teams in offensive efficiency while Wisconsin at 5-1 is 19th in defensive efficiency.
Though they rank lower in their respective strength, the Badgers have played better competition this season, facing Xavier, Stanford, Oklahoma and Virginia — with none of those games at home at the Kohl Center. NC State’s biggest test was Saturday, when the team held on for a 78-74 win over Mercer after leading by 21 points with 12:01 remaining in the second half.
Though N.C. State leads all Division I teams in scoring margin at +33, it is hard to put much stock into that number with it coming against Mount St. Mary’s, Maryland Eastern Shore, UNC-Asheville, Maine, Saint Peter’s and Mercer.
Ethan Happ gets all the accolades for Wisconsin given that he led the team last season in points, rebounds, assists, steals, rebounds and blocks, but he now has help in the backcourt. D’Mitrik Trice is shooting 57.1 percent from 3-point range as he is logging 16.8 points per game while the team is 20th in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio.
The talented backcourt of NC State finally will have its hands full, and the all-around play of Happ should lift Wisconsin to a home victory.
The play: Wisconsin, -7.
