UMass is the only team in FBS without a win this season, but that’s just part of the story.

Not only are the Minutemen 0-10, which includes a loss to Bryant, but their average margin of defeat is a whopping 27.1 points. UMass has lost six games by at least 30 points, including its last two outings against Akron and Northern Illinois.

Bookmakers don’t expect things to get any prettier on Tuesday night. UMass is a 32.5-point underdog at Ohio in the latest installment of “MACtion.”

It is almost unheard of for one MAC team to be favored by this many points over the other. There have been some really bad teams in this conference over the years, but the gap between the top and bottom of the pile has rarely been viewed as this wide.

It’s worth mentioning that UMass joined the MAC this year.

We can get into the tale of the tape for this game, but really, it can be summed up thusly: UMass is the worst team in the country by miles, on both sides of the ball.

In other words, the path to a cover here isn’t about what to expect out of UMass. It’s really about if Ohio is going to have enough time to light up the scoreboard in such a fashion that it can cover this enormous spread.

I’m skeptical.

It has nothing really to do with Ohio’s output. The Bobcats are a fine offensive team by MAC standards, scoring just under 24 points per contest and averaging 5.8 yards per play.

The reason I am skeptical is that Ohio tends to lean on the run in most matchups, but will likely double down on that philosophy in this outing because it will almost certainly get ahead of UMass and want to shorten the game as much as possible.

It should also help UMass, at least in terms of covering this spread, that Ohio has a potentially crucial game with Buffalo next week. The Bobcats and Bulls are two of the five MAC teams with a 4-2 record going into Week 13.

Don’t be surprised if Ohio pulls some starters in the second half if it gets out to a massive lead.

Betting on UMass is nobody’s idea of a fun time, but this spread is just too wide.
