American Express yesterday reported a third-quarter profit of $1.2 billion, or $1.03 a share, up from $1.1 billion, or 90 cents a share, a year ago.

Total revenue in the period rose 9 percent to $7.57 billion.

Analysts polled by FactSet Research were looking for earnings of 95 cents a share, on average, with sales of $7.58 billion.

The company said it saw bottom-line improvements across all of its business segments.

Card-member spending jumped 16 percent to record levels.
