When it was reported that Swedish automaker Koenigsegg might finally take part in the 24-hour Le Mans race in 2020, car geeks freaked out. After all, these are some of the fastest speedsters in the world. Making its North American debut at the New York International Auto Show, the brand’s Jesko — a hypercar, meaning it boasts ultra-light construction (in this case, a carbon-fiber chassis) — is said to be capable of 300 mph. Powered by a twin-turbocharged V8 engine that cranks out 1600 horsepower, it’s equipped with an unusual nine-speed, seven-clutch gearbox. The brainchild behind the $3 million Jesko is Christian von Koenigsegg, who went from washing cars to producing them. And he has already sold out the entire 125-edition limited run of his latest.

Mercedes-Benz is introducing its 2020 GLC300 Coupe at the show, and the crossover SUV is tricked out with a plethora of high-tech toys. The new MBUX telematics system is a personal assistant that responds to the prompt, “Hey Mercedes.” Among the features it can control: a 10.2-inch touchscreen and an optional 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Thanks to artificial intelligence, the car can learn where you want to go and what songs you want to hear. MBUX also lets you choose control modes — “Comfort” offers better suspension; “Sport,” more direct engine response — just like in a video game.

Bugatti dropped jaws when the company sold the one-off prototype La Voiture Noire for $19 million at the Geneva Motor Show in March. That stunner won’t be making the trip to New York, but the Chiron Sport “110 ans Bugatti” will likely be the most expensive car at the show — with a whopping asking price of $3.745 million. All 20 limited-edition coupes have already been snapped up. It’s a tribute to the 110-year-old automaker’s foundation in France, with the colors of that nation’s flag (blue for liberty, white for equality and red for fraternity) highlighted on the hyerpcar’s wing mirrors seatbacks and exterior trim.

While many automakers no longer bother with dazzling concept cars, Volkswagen is delivering big, fun ideas with its battery-powered I.D. Buggy Concept. The retro-futuristic design, shown in neon green, recalls a 1960’s California dune buggy, complete with no roof, no doors — but it does have weatherproof seats and even water drains. A 62.0-kWh battery pack gives the rear-wheel-drive machine 155 miles of electric range. And it’s customizable: You can add extra seats and even switch out the body. Who knows if the beach buggy will ever make it to production, but it’s sure fun to imagine — especially since VW’s in the last year of making its iconic Beetle.
