American International Group, the troubled insurer rescued by Uncle Sam, selected ex-MetLife CEO Robert Benmosche as the company’s fifth leader since 2005.

Benmosche will take the post next Tuesday, the company said yesterday. Restructuring chief Paula Rosput Reynolds, previously considered by analysts to be a candidate for CEO, will leave the firm this quarter, AIG said.

Benmosche, 65, served at MetLife for eight years through 2006 and oversaw the firm’s transition to a publicly traded business from a policyholder-owned firm.
