Ascena Retail Group, the owner of Ann Taylor, Dress Barn and Lane Bryant clothing retailers, is closing up to 657 stores, or 25 percent of its total number, the company said on Thursday.

Ascena reported a loss of $1.03 billion in the most recent quarter as same-store sales sank 8 percent.
