While overall retail sales revenue for the second-biggest shopping season in New York slowed 0.2 percent when compared to 2015, used clothing sales grew by 7.7 percent.
Cash-strapped shoppers looking for additional value snapped up used clothing to make their back-to-school dollars go further.
Kate Schmitz has never seen this type of demand back-to-school in the 10 years she has operated Flying Squirrel
Stocking a mix of new toys and gifts in front, and second-hand threads in the back of her North Brooklyn storefront.
In the past, some customers snubbed the racks of used clothes, but this year, Schmitz racked up a 10 percent back-to-school sales gain, sparked by strong demand for shoes and dresses.
“This is an obvious reflection of the economy,” said Schmitz. “New York has never been so high-end, yet so many New Yorkers are stretched.”
