Barnes & Noble is staying out of the price war that has Amazon and Wal-Mart offering certain hardcover bestsellers for $9.
“We have no plans to do that at this time,” said Barnes & Noble.com President William Lynch, referring to the price cuts during a press conference about the chain’s new e-reader, Nook.
“The book business is a long tail business,” Lynch said. “Bestsellers comprise less than 5 percent of the total business.”
Last week, Wal-Mart announced that it would reduce prices for some highly anticipated books to $10 online. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, clearly sensing a threat to his business, quickly matched the price, only to have Wal-Mart discount again. Target joined the fray on Monday. Now all three retailers are pricing the books around $9.
