Bitcoin, the digital-only currency, broke through the $1,200 mark last week on the trading exchange Mt. Gox.
The virtual currency rose as high as $1,240 on Mt. Gox on Friday.
Bitcoin pushed above $900 for the first time recently in the wake of a Senate hearing on virtual currencies, another sign that it is becoming a bit more mainstream.
Bitcoin traded around $13 at the beginning of this year.
