Don’t go searching for Michael Bloomberg‘s name on the masthead of the New York Times anytime soon.

The mayor yesterday dismissed a report in Newsweek that advisers are urging him to merge Bloomberg LP, his very successful financial information services company, with the struggling Times.

“I don’t know why anybody keeps pushing this,” Bloomberg said. “I am not a newspaper person. I know nothing about the production of a newspaper. I know something about reading it. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don’t.”

In case there was any doubt, the mayor added unequivocally: “I am not going to go into the newspaper business.”

Bloomberg also made it clear he’s not going to become president of his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University, when he leaves City Hall in 2010.
