The latest chapter in the “Chronicles of Narnia” saga sailed to the top of the weekend box office, but its debut was weak compared with those of the first two films.

“The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” took in $24.5 million domestically, according to studio estimates released yesterday.

The Johnny Depp-Angelina Jolie romantic thriller, “The Tourist,” opened in second place, with $17 million.

“Dawn Treader” revenues showed a huge drop from 2005’s “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” which had a $65.6 million opening weekend, and 2008’s “Prince Caspian,” which made $55 million.

The previous weekend’s No. 1 movie, Disney’s animated musical “Tangled,” slipped to third, with $14.6 million, raising its domestic total to $115.6 million. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” conjured up $8.5 million to take fourth, and “Unstoppable” rounded out the top five, with $3.8 million.
