Audiophiles including Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger like Grado Labs’ high-fidelity headphones for their clear sound and made-in-Brooklyn heritage.

With devotees including Neil Young, director Spike Jonze and Aerosmith, Grado is putting a new, hyperlocal twist on the concept of Brooklyn-made, crafting 1,000 limited-edition headphones from the wood of a reclaimed Sunset Park maple tree.

The local maple replaces the mahogany typically used in Sunset Park-based Grado’s wooden headphones.

“We’ve been making wooden headphones for 20 years, and … ‘Oh, a tree grows in Brooklyn,’ people would kid us about it,” second-generation owner John Grado told Catherine Curan, referencing the classic 1943 novel about a poor girl in Williamsburg who hopes for a better life.

“But it just seemed to be the right time, and everything fell into place for us to do this,” Grado said.
