Citigroup, the largest US bank to miss Federal Reserve capital requirements, erred when signaling that it would boost payouts before winning regulatory approval, wrote Michael Mayo, an analyst at CLSA Ltd. in a letter to clients yesterday.

Zynga, the social-gaming company that held its initial public offering in December, is planning a secondary offering of $400 million.

Weaker gold

Gold for April delivery dropped $51.30, or 3 percent, to settle at $1,642.90 an ounce on Nymex. That was gold’s lowest settlement since Jan. 13.

The Fed announced the launch of its official Twitter channel. Its first substantive tweet linked to a video of Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke explaining the structure of the central bank.

Activist hedge fund Third Point said it will launch a campaign in the next seven days to install its own hand-picked directors on Yahoo!’s board, blasting the struggling Internet company for failing to give the firm a greater say in its operations.
