Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse Group told New York state regulators yesterday that it will eliminate 138 jobs in Manhattan starting next month. The dismissals will occur Aug. 7 through Oct. 14.
Housing
The Commerce Department said that housing starts rose 6.9 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 760,000 units. That was the highest rate since October 2008.
No interest
The liquidator of Bernard Madoff’s brokerage said customers shouldn’t be paid interest and will ask a judge to affirm his way of determining claims.
eBay upbeat
EBay posted better-than-expected quarterly results as more consumers shopped on its online marketplaces and paid with its PayPal payment service, and it stuck to its full-year forecasts.
Big Blue bullish
IBM raised its full-year earnings target despite a currency hit of $1 billion. The tech giant’s second-quarter earnings of $3.51 a share beat analysts’ estimates of $3.43, but revenue of $25.8 billion fell short of the Street’s view of $26.3 billion.
