A mushy May

Hiring by US firms was sluggish in May as private employers added 135,000 jobs. The ADP report yesterday showed an acceleration from April but missed forecasts for a gain of 165,000.

Whoa Nellie!

US stocks plummeted, sending the S&P 500 Index to a one-month low of 1,608, as jobs and factory data missed estimates and investors speculated whether the Fed will taper bond purchases.

CBS, owner of the most-watched television network, promoted Chief Financial Officer Joe Ianniello to the newly created post of chief operating officer, elevating Les Moonves’s top lieutenant.

Lots of $pring

Mattress Firm shares jumped to their highest price in more than a year after the company reported a surge in profit in its most recent quarter. Shares closed at $39.62, up 5.5 percent.

IMF muffed it

The IMF admitted to making major mistakes in its handling of the Greek bailout. The IMF said it grossly underestimated the damage austerity wreaked on Greece’s economy.
