Dollar dive
The dollar slipped to a 14-month low, push ing gold to a record peak and helping lift oil to a seven-week high on worries that US in terest rates would re main at rock-bottom lows for some time. Spot gold scaled an all- time high of $1,068.30 an ounce, and oil reached a seven-week high of $74.47 a barrel.
Fed rates
The US economy will not quickly snap back from its deep recession, Fed Vice Chairman Don ald Kohn said, making the case for a prolonged period of ultra-low inter est rates. Kohn said the sluggish recovery would leave so much slack in the economy that infla tion posed no threat in the near term.
Intel earns
Intel reported higher- than-expected quarterly results and forecast reve nue for the current quar ter ahead of Wall Street targets on recovering de mand for personal com puters. Net profit in the third quarter was $1.9 billion or 33 cents per share, vs. $2.01 billion, or 35 cents per share, a year earlier.
Whitney
Banking analyst Meredith Whitney cut Goldman Sachs to “neutral” from “buy” in a move that bucks the Street’s recent opti mism on the shares.
UBS case
The Justice Depart ment has indicted a handful of foreigners who allegedly helped Americans evade US taxes, charges that stem from the department’s investigation into Swiss banking giant UBS AG.
